MARK SMOLIN'S DREAM SUBMISSIONS
(page three)
Troubleshooter Tom Martino:
-I was driving west on Hampden (still cloudy) and a new bulletin came on the radio. It was Tom Martino reporting that a robbery had just taken place on something something and Hampden and now the robber was jacking a car, armed and dangerous. I was driving straight, only dead in front of me is this tiny parking lot for a gas station or Grease Monkey that I pull into. As I do that I figure out that I see the guy trying to jack a car maybe 10 feet to my left, and there is too much traffic to pull back out into the street. I hop out of my car and run south and the robber sees me. I'm sprinting and I bump into Tom Martino reporting on the south side of the building. I tell him what I saw and ask how long before the cops get here and suddenly I feel my cell phone vibrate. I look at the screen and the robber sent me a little looped video of himself getting into my car. I ask Tom, "How the hell did he do that? And how the hell did he know my number?" Tom takes the phone and answers, "This is Troubleshooter Tom Martino, and we know where you are." Tom's voice cracks and I can hear how nervous he is. We run West behind the building through another parking lot and I crouch down by some little retaining wall. Tom is just standing out in the open, only now Tom has a little pistol and I have a HUGE revolver. The guy comes around the back of the building, sees us and charges. He's running down between an row of cars and picks Tom off. I remember thinking I have a chance to take him out from this distance and take a shot at his head, only I fire too high. I crouch back down and he comes around the wall. For a second I have a chance to get off a perfect point blank shot at his chest and I KNOW I've got him, but the gun doesn't fire. I crouch again and I think I'm fucked. I think to myself that if he shoots down now the bullet will go down vertically through my spine.
